UKIP to stand in Dunfermline & West Fife By-Election

Looks like UKIP are planning to stand in this by-election on the 9th February 2006, as originally UKIP werent intending to stand, but The UKIP think-tank Lechlade Group, persuaded the UKIP NEC for a UKIP Candidate to stand.

In the 2005 General Election, UKIP got 1.5% of the vote in this seat, hopefully, UKIP will do better in a few weeks time.

Er... they didn't. They polled a lowly 208 votes (that's 0.6% of the vote, stats fans). Bearing in mind that the Conservatives also lost votes in the by-election, it seems that the Eurosceptic parties were wholeheartedly rejected by the people of Dunfermline.

Well Scotland, isnt UKIP's stronghold.

UKIP seems to get most support from the South west of England and the South East.

But surely UKIP should do BETTER in a by-election than a normal election?

Traditionally, by-elections have helped minority parties. That was certainly true in Dunfermline. UKIP were beaten by the Scottish Socialists, the Scottish Christian Party (who?) and the National Alliance Against Tolls (who?). Meanwhile, the Lib Dem share of the vote went up astronomically.

UKIP, however, managed to reduce their votes to nearly a third of what they managed in May and lose their deposit. That is not the result of a credible, serious political party.
