All of which is fair comment, EXCEPT for several key facts:

1) The two by-elections were in the same area (one was in a Boston Borough Council seat and one was a Boston ward seat on the County Council), and UKIP failed to field any candidates at all in any of the other TEN by-elections which happened on the same day in the rest of the country (indicating that they have either such little support that a campaign in those areas would have been pointless, or that they couldn't find a party member prepared to be publically humiliated by standing).

2) In the first result you cite (the County Council ward of Boston Coastal), the swing in this election from the last 'proper' election was 9.6% AWAY from UKIP to the Tories. Not such an astonishing victory after all - more like a defeat, in fact. In the other seat, meanwhile, the swing was from Tories to UKIP - but not sufficient for them to win, indicating that UKIP are still bobbins when it comes to running campaigns.

Now, I'm as happy as anyone to accept that Dave Cameron's a twat and his party have their own fair number of wackos and xenophobes amongst them. But that doesn't alter the fact that - in the mind of both the electorate and political analysts - UKIP are a nothing fringe party. And it certainly doesn't alter the fact that statistics, when analysed properly (rather than in the myopic way you've managed) don't actually show what you seem to think.

Wow, that's amazing story Cyburn. Could this be the first step towards UKIP taking over the world?

UKIP seems to be the only thing you ever blog about, and it's always positive about them and negative about everybody else. Are they paying you for it?

Hi Cyburn. With results like that in crucial elections, it can only be a matter of time before we have a UKIP European Commissioner. Let's hope it's you. Commissioner Cyburn - has a ring to it doesn't it?
